A Service for The Day of Pentecost

In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, you may not be able to attend our communal worship services. What follows is a contemporary Day of Pentecost service which, I pray, you can participate in at a time(s) that are convenient to you. This 'service' will take about forty (40) minutes.

I pray you will feel called to ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE in this service.

The text that is in regular typeface (that is what you are reading at the moment) is to be read quietly, while the text that is in bold face (like you are reading right now) is meant to be read aloud.

Call to Worship

Pentecost, which is celebrated the 49th day (the seventh sunday) after Easter Sunday, commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ while they were in Jerusalem celebrating the 'Feast of Weeks', as described in the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 2:1–31).

Opening Hymn

Let us continue by watching, and please do feel free to sing along with, the video, the wonderful "Come Down, O Love Divine"

When you are ready - click the "play" button on the video window, below:

Come down, O love divine, seek thou this soul of mine,
and visit it with thine own ardour glowing;
O Comforter, draw near, within my heart appear,
and kindle it, Thy holy flame bestowing.

O let it freely burn, til earthly passions turn
to dust and ashes in its heat consuming;
And let thy glorious light shine ever on my sight,
and clothe me round, the while my path illuming.

Confession

Let us pray together.

God of mercy,
we have sinned against you and against others.
We have sinned in what we have done,
and in what we have failed to do.
We are truly sorry.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,
who died for our sins,
forgive us all that is past
and raise us to newness of life.   Amen.

The Prayer for the Day (Collect)

Let us pray together.

Holy Spirit of God, blowing through creation:

No door can keep you out.
Unlock our hearts, breathe on us anew;
that we may speak God’s words of life.
With the Father and the Son, you live and reign, one God, now and forever. Amen.

The Lord's Prayer

Remebering that we are confident to pray this day, and every day, beacuse Jesus Christ has taught us:

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and for ever.   Amen.

Pause for a moment of silent reflection.
