A Service for Ascension Day

With our communal worship services currently "on hold", in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, what follows is a contemporary Ascension Day service which, I pray, you can participate in at a time(s) that are convenient to you. This 'service' will take about thirty (30) minutes.

I pray that you will feel called to ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE in this service.

The text that is in regular typeface (that is what you are reading at the moment) is to be read quietly, while the text that is in bold face (like you are reading right now) is meant to be said\read aloud.

Call to Worship

It was just a cup filled with wine.
It was just ordinary bread, baked for guests.

Until Jesus took them
took and drank from the cup,
even though it was his cup of pain,
filled with the agony of the world;

took and broke the bread –
even though his body
was too young to be broken.

Ours  would be ordinary lives
unless the bread, unless the wine,
from Jesus is poured into them:
and the mystery of grace takes place.

Come, not because you fully understand,
but because you need to reach out
and receive the life that is offered to you in Christ.
AMEN.

Opening Hymn

Let us continue by listening to, and please do feel free to sing along with, "All Creatures of our God and King."

When you are ready - click the "play" button on the video window, below:

All creatures of our God and King
Lift up your voice and with us sing,
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Bright burning sun with golden beam,
Pale silver moon with softer gleam!

Refrain:
O praise Him! O praise Him!
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Let all things their Creator bless,
And worship Him in humbleness,
O praise Him! Alleluia!
Praise God the Father, praise the Son,
And praise the Spirit, Three in One!

Refrain:
O praise Him! O praise Him!
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

The Prayer for the Day (Collect)

Let us pray together.

Eternal and gracious God, we believe your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ,
to have ascended with triumph into your kingdom in heaven;
may we also in heart and mind ascend to where he is and with him continually dwell.

Through Jesus Christ our Liberator,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and forever. Amen.

Pause and Reflect

Just take a moment now to pause. Bow your head, close your eyes. Let The Word of The Lord speak into your being.

Gradual Hymn

Let us continue by listening to, and please do feel free to sing along with, "Alleluia! Sing To Jesus."

When you are ready - click the "play" button on the video window, below:

Alleluia! Sing to Jesus, His the sceptre, His the throne
Alleluia! His the triumph, His the victory alone
Hark! The songs of peaceful Zion thunder like a mighty flood
Jesus out of every nation hath redeemed us by his blood.

Alleluia! Alleluia, Glory be to Thine on high
Alleluia! to The Saviour who has won the victory
Alleluia! to The Spirit font of love and sanctity
Alleluia! Alleluia, to the triune majesty.

Our Prayers (and I encourage you to pray aloud)

A prayer for the Corona Virus situation

Jesus Christ, you travelled through towns and villages “curing every disease and illness.” At your command, the sick were made well. Come to our aid now, in the midst of of the coronavirus, that we may experience your healing love.

Heal those who are sick with the virus.  Be with those of who died. Comfort those who mourn. Strengthen those who are anxious. Protect those who minister to and care for the sick.

Jesus Christ, healer of all, stay by our side in this time of uncertainty and sorrow.

(pause for silent, personal reflection)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear my Prayer

Heavenly Father,
on this day of Ascension
when you took Christ beyond our sight

and as we watch and wait for Jesus' return

prepare our hearts and minds

for the coming of your kingdom
so that we might seek him in glory.
May we follow where he has led
and find our hope in his glory,
for he is Lord forever.

(pause for silent, personal reflection)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear my Prayer

Everlasting God we thank you for having heard us and, confident that all is safely in your hands, wherever we may be, confined to home or restricted in any way we know that we are surrounded by your love and care in all that we do.

(pause for silent, personal reflection)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear my Prayer

Merciful father: accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ.  AMEN.

The Lord's Prayer

Remebering that we are confident to pray this day, and every day, beacuse Jesus Christ has taught us:

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and for ever.   Amen.
